Advanced Afrobeat For Beginners Volume 1

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: “It was the sound of post-independence Nigeria, not Vampire Weekend.” Suffice it to say that Afrobeat has become an increasingly prominent element in today’s fusion music. Yet we seldom stop to think where these unique tones originated. So this compilation marks the beginning of a series dedicated to investigating the peaks and troughs of a glossed-over genre. After all, no musical victory is without its unsung heroes.

Broadcast 2000 - Building Blocks EP | Brave And Beauteous

The slight air of xylophone clinks, modest orchestration and cyclical fluctuations of acoustic guitar has never been so much as a commanding figure. But North London’s Broadcast 2000, the successors to acoustic troubadours Artisan, have successfully employed such delicate forces in the most arresting manner feasible. And, as always, the power lies in front man Joe Steer’s ability to stray from not only convolution but also the thick glaze of production which plagues most modern-day recordings.

MGMT at McCarren Pool 07/27/08

Last Sunday afternoon marked the culmination of a relatively Brooklyn-based band’s career. Whether or not you witnessed their performance in a dingy club behind the Domino Sugar Factory in South Williamsburg just four months prior, any number of Brooklynites could supply a lengthy dissertation on MGMT’s short road to success. For a short while it was merely regarded as the product of happenstance and epoch-making psychedelic pop music.

Gangi - A | Where The Wild Things Are

Welcome to Matt Gangi’s extremely stylized yet vaguely recognizable world. Gangi’s debut, A, acquires strength from not only the exemplary songwriting, but the vast array of musical personalities that the band displays. In a span of minutes, they could turn from Neil Young to Jethro Tull. And to that end, Gangi certainly shows signs of musical schizophrenia—juxtaposing various elements that shouldn’t mesh, and yet somehow they do.

Hot Chip Remixes Pharcyde

In case you were on the fence about Delicious Vinyl, who’s head honcho happens to be Rick Ross, feast your ears on Hot Chip’s remix of Pharcyde’s “Passin’ My By.” This spaced-out version, which features a slow churn of reverberant keys and wailing solos, comes courtesy of RMXXOLOGY—a remix-heavy compilation that finds Eminem, Peaches and Hot Chip, among others, re-interpreting classic hip-hop hits.

Dungen - “Sätt Att Se”

Stockholm-based psych-rockers Dungen are poised to release 4 via Subliminal Sound this coming fall. However, the first single, “Sätt Att Se,” reveals a starkly different, folk-tinged side of the band. Each record they seem to become more and more submersed in a hazy, psych-induced vision. But 4’s leading track promises an inventive and fresh approach.

Primary 1’s Studio Diary | Highlarious

Primary 1 has only graced the pages of this website once. But the London-based electro-pop singer holds a special place in Bwank!’s little heart. His acerbic understanding of all that surrounds him is downright droll. Even his formal proceedings, like recording in a studio, are leavened with humor. And that brilliant wit has now manifested in the form of some great 4th-grade-style depictions.
